Notes:
This dress was given to us by a friend a few years ago when she went on the mission field. This dress belonged to our friend's great Aunt Lucy. I seem to recall that Aunt Lucy lived in the mid-west, possibly Kansas. I really don't remember now.
This outfit is excellent condition. The silk of the bodice has shattered a bit, mostly in the center front. There is some slight staining under the arms. For a silk gown of it's age, it's in wonderful condition.
The fabric is a crisp, slightly shiny silk. The textile is black with small white threads forming a very subtle check. From far away, it registers as a charcoal black. The lining is of black and tan polished cottons, that have been pieced. The bodice is trimmed with a brown/black braid and the sleeves are topped with delicate black lace.
The bodice fastens in the center front with large hooks and eyes. The bodice is darted, boned and sill has it's original silk twill waist stay. The skirt also fastens with hooks and eyes and is slightly elliptical.
I love this piece and feel extremely fortunate to own it. I love to image "Aunt Lucy" going to church or to town in this very dignified ensemble! For more notes and other observations, please click on the thumbnails below.
